Another Day; Another Injury

Alright this is getting freaking ridiculous. All the great players in the NBA are getting injured. I could accept Kobe Bryant taking some time off as he’s been playing since I could comprehend what basketball is. Whenever Derrick Rose fell to the ground, the thought of him going down again always flashed up, so it wasn’t unexpected but still all the disappointing. On top of that its been a boat load of good players that have sat the sidelines this season because of injury this season.

Now we have to deal with an injury that messes with the entire outlook of the Western Conference for a while. The Oklahoma City Thunders starting point guard Russell Westbrook will be out until after the all star break, which is in the middle of February.

So no Westbrook for almost two months.

Dammit.

After Russell Westbrook came back from injury at the beginning of the season, we got to see who the best team in the West was, and that was the Thunder. Yes the Portland Trailblazers and San Antonio Spurs were right near the top as well, but the way the Thunder played on both floors and the consistency they had as they did it showed why they were the best. With Westbrook out though, all that flies completely out the window. Even with Kevin Durant, the Thunder become a weaker, middle of the pack team in the Western Conference without Russell.

This huge injury should give a lot of teams some time to get themselves together in the West. The one team I see benefiting from the Westbrook injury the most is the Houston Rockets. As of late the Rockets have been clicking chemistry wise and showed on Christmas that they have multiple weapons. Oh yeah and they put on a show against the Memphis Grizzlies the other night as well. Now I know these are small sample sizes but these samples are coming against really good teams. The Rockets have the weapons to overtake the Thunder as the best team in the West right now, as Westbrook recovers from his knee surgery. The Trailblazers, Clippers, and Warriors are all great teams as well but I doubt they’ll capitalize on this time like the Rockets will. Plus I don’t think any of those teams have the potential to be the best in the West, right now.

As for the Thunder, they may want to look into a bench scorer that can help out for the time being. Since there will be an obvious hole at the starting point guard spot, Reggie Jackson will slide in, leaving Jeremy Lamb alone on the bench were he worked wonderfully with Jackson. They could probably get MarShon Brooks from the Boston Celtics for not much as they’ve shown no use for him. Brooks plays like a young Kobe and has the fro to match as well. I know Leandro Barbosa is still a free agent and he can definitely get buckets off the bench. Rodrique Beaubois could also be an option. I doubt that the Thunder will do anything though as I feel like they’ll just stick with what they got until Westbrook comes back. That’s not the worse move, but I would love for them to make a move for  another scorer.

Either way this goes, this is not only a huge blow to the Thunder but its a huge blow to the Western Conference. The West just got blown wide open.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece! Second random fact, I got beatz! check me out http://www.reverbnation.com/ielabs
