When Brittany Griner left Baylor University and was drafted number 1 by the Phoenix Mercury everyone labeled her as the one to transcend the WNBA. The WNBA, a league searching for relevance in the sports world mulled by the thoughts of naysayers stating the decline of excitement and interest in women ballplayers, Brittany Griner was supposed to bring back that excitement.
Before the season started, if you were asked who would win this year’s WNBA Rookie of the Year reward, without hesitation you would have probably suggested Griner. Do you still feel that way?
Yes, Griner has had some dunks during the game. Yes, Griner has blocked some shots this year. I’m sure she is as disappointed as everyone else is in regards to not playing much due to injury. But is she living up to the hype.
With Griner mostly on the bench, the limelight has shifted even more to Elena Delle Donne (who has made a significant impact before missing games due to a concussion).
As a fan, I know you are waiting to see if and when Griner will rebound and become the impact player you predicted but until she does, it’s possible that Elena Delle Donne has stolen her thunder?
