NFL Comparison: Larry English – San Diego Chargers

Strengths

Khalil Mack has an intriguing blend of size, strength, and speed to play linebacker at the next level. He has the athletic ability to run with some tight ends and running backs, and the power to easily beat them when blocking. Mack also has the type of closing speed that consistently gets him to the ballcarrier. Those attributes have helped him dominate MAC offenses as well as set records for forced fumbles and tackles for loss in a collegiate career. He has been a playmaker and game-changer for Buffalo University.

Weaknesses

Despite Mack’s production, he is still a raw football player. He does have a high ceiling but has a long road ahead of him to reach it. Motor runs hot and cold. He has used his strength and speed to beat blockers up to this point, and will need to add some pass rush moves to help him get to the quarterback in the NFL. He also lacks lateral agility, which could make it difficult to tackle in space if he is converted to an outside linebacker. He will not be able to dominate behind the line of scrimmage like he did in college. Mack also takes some poor angles to the ball carrier, and looks lost at times when dropping into coverage.

Conclusion

Khalil Mack has immense potential, and could become a great linebacker in the NFL. At this point, Mack may be a bit overhyped and could be over drafted because of it. A raw player drafted too high can add a lot of pressure and lofty expectations. He will be expected to be in the Von Miller/Aldon Smith category, even though it is more likely he falls in the Larry English/Aaron Maybin category. It may take patience and an ideal situation to develop.
