Hidden Talent: MN Twins Pitcher Jared Burton

Jul 28, 2013

Upon first glance, one might see Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Jared Burton as a disappointment in the 2013 season. After looking at his stats and win/loss, it’s hard to deny that Burton has been disappointing. This season, he has a 3.53 ERA (almost 40 points above his average) and a 1-6 win/loss record; however, this is actually good news for Twins fans, because it shows that Burton is a potentially solid pitcher who might sign cheaply when his contract is up, or be good trade bait before the trade deadline.

When Burton first came into the league, he was a winning pitcher with a low ERA. After missing a couple seasons due to injury, Burton has been working his way back into a groove, but it is clearly taking him a while. If his past performance is any indication though, he’s worth the wait.

As the Twins fight their way through a losing season, Burton might become trade bait for a potential contender. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has recently decided to keep Burton in the dugout in favor of other relievers, despite Burton’s improvements. With the trade deadline approaching, now might be the time for Minnesota to move Burton for a younger prospect. It’s not certain which teams, if any, are interested in Burton; however, if GM’s are paying attention, they can find themselves in a great position to land a potential star.

Wherever Jared Burton ends up, it’s safe to assume that at some point he will be back to his old self. Though he’s struggling now, only time will tell if he breaks through and starts pitching the way he’s capable of.
