Michael Carter Williams Wins Rookie Of The Year

May 5, 2014

It was October 30th 2013, the Philadelphia 76ers very first game of the season. The defending champion Miami Heat were in town to get an easy win. 23 seconds into the game 76ers rookie Michael Carter Williams stole the ball and raced down court as he rose up for a two handed slam. At that moment everything we were told about the 6 foot 6 point guard out of Syracuse was in doubt. He was supposed to struggle from the very begging but instead he started out with a bang. Carter Williams finished that contest with 22 points, 12 assist, 7 rebounds and 9 steals as the 76ers pulled off the 114-110 upset over the defending champs.

We all knew after the game that Carter Williams was going to win Rookie of the Year. It didn’t matter what Victor Oladipo did and it didn’t matter how much more competitive the Utah Jazz were with Trey Burke, Michael Carter Williams was our guy.

That game almost gave us hope that the 76ers would be decent this year behind Cater Williams but soon everything went right how it was expected. Except Carter Williams wasn’t just a piece for the 76ers but he became a building block, the only bright spot on a team full of D-League talent. Behind MCW this team pulled out a 19-63 record which is pretty darn impressive when you look at the talent he was surrounded by.

Michael Carter Williams finished the season averaging 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assist which he lead all rookies in each of those categories. I’ll be the first to admit that the rookie class this year was pretty bad. Having Carter Williams come out the way he did was a good thing because it would of really sucked  if all the rookies were playing as bad as say Anthony Bennett.

MCW’s Rookie of the Year is a huge positive for the 76ers who look to be building for the future. The number 6 pick of last years draft, Nerlens Noel didn’t play a game set and will be ready for next year. If he wouldn’t of gotten hurt during his only year in college he would of likely been the number one pick, so I think this guy will be an impact player. Also the 76ers have high draft picks coming up in what will be a great draft class. The 76ers tanked perfectly this year and even have the rookie of the year as well, sounds like these guys have a plan.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece! Second random fact, I got beatz! check me out http://www.reverbnation.com/ielabs
