Should Michael Beasley Get Another Chance?

Sep 7, 2013

A few days ago the Phoenix Suns decided to waive troubled forward Michael Beasley. This comes after only playing one season for the Suns after signing a 3 year deal last summer. Beasley’s career in Phoenix went completely wrong. He played horrible, he was inefficient and he even lost his starting spot. That’s really bad when you take in the fact that the Suns were the very worse team in the Western Conference.

It looked like things would look up after the Suns traded for Caron Butler, who Beasley would of definitely played behind but could of been a great mentor for Beasley. Butler left behind a troubled past and has become a success within the NBA, so he’s the type of guy to have around Beasley. Then Beasley got arrested, for marijuana, again.

Instead of keeping Caron Butler around, the Suns traded him away just so they could have enough money to pay Beasley his money and get him out of town. What makes this even worse is that the Suns aren’t even looking to win many games this season. Beasley could of at least played for his numbers and try and make himself look more attractive to potential teams. For a player like Beasley, a team like the Suns should want to keep him around to help with the losing. According to the Suns, he cant even help with that.

Now here he is 5 years into his career, sitting as a free agent. This guy was picked number two in the 2008 NBA draft behind Derrick Rose. Just imagine how set back the Chicago Bulls would of been if they thought Beasley was the right choice for number one.

Michael Beasley is talented, he just hasn’t made good decisions. Whenever he’s in some kind of trouble its usually involving marijuana. This happens pretty much every season. When he first came to Phoenix he said he was done with all the marijuana and it was time to be an all-star. The all-star thing wasn’t expected but we at least expected him to calm down and get his act together.

What’s with these players and all this damn weed? J.R. Smith just got suspended for 5 games for failing a drug test, and its rumored that weed is the case. Someone has to tell these guys that its not worth it man. I really hate how these players are so talented and take it for granted. If a guy like Chris Copeland slipped u and got arrested you can already bet he’s getting waived. Copeland worked his ass to get to the NBA and definitely is appreciative for his spot in the NBA, why can’t Beasley? It’s not hard man just try!

As for Beasley he will be very lucky if he gets a second chance. A bad team wont want him around their young players because of the negativity he brings. A contending team wont want him around if he cant control himself and an efficient scorer. The sad thing is there are plenty of teams that he could fit in with right now (Spurs, Thunder, Lakers, Pelicans, Mavs, Heat, Hawks). Those are all good teams that could potentially give him a try. Its even rumored that the defending champions Miami Heat are considering bringing him back. That just proves how valuable he can be to a team.

The fact that the defending champs would want him sort of make me mad. Here’s a guy who’s been nothing but trouble and has a chance to ride on LeBron’s back to get a ring? Hell no! He may be a good fit but he needs to prove he knows how to act before anything like that goes down.

I say somebody should pick up Beasley this season but it should be his last chance. If he cant put the weed down after that then there’s no room in this league for him. He should remember that there are countless guys who want his spot and will do whatever to take it. Once he takes on that same mentality then he might find a little success.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece! Second random fact, I got beatz! check me out http://www.reverbnation.com/ielabs
