Should the Toronto Raptors Make A Deal?

Should the Toronto Raptors Make A Deal?

Jan 29, 2014

The Raptors have been very confusing this year. When they had Rudy Gay they seemed like one those garbage Eastern Conference teams that are playing to hopefully sneak into the 8th seed of the playoffs. After they traded Gay for a group bench player contributors they’ve looked like a solid team in line to make the playoffs this season and have home court advantage.

Its weird but the Raptors have been really good of late. If its Kyle Lowry, DeMar Derozen, Terrance Ross, Amir Johnson or Jonas Valucainus, somebody on the Raptors is having a big night. By switching out Gay for Ross in the starting lineup this team has been pretty dope and fun to watch, racking up countless wins. Now the problem is what should they do about all this winning?

Should the team make a move to help them make a playoff push right now? Maybe the team should trade Lowry and try and build for the future?

This has to be a hard decision for the Raptors front office. Even though the team is doing well right now lets look at there record 23-21, that is only 2 games over 500. In the East this year that looks great but realistically that is not too good. That is number three in the conference right now but that is really just middle of the pack. The Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls are all right there near them in the standings. If the Raptors dropped 2 or 3 games in a row they could easily see themselves around the number 7th seed. Then we have to add in the Brooklyn Nets good play of late, they can be accounted for a team that’ll be way over 500 by time this season is over.

Could the current Raptors contend with the other teams in the Eastern Conference during the playoffs? They would not put a dent in the Miami Heat or the Indiana Pacers and that is who they would most likely face in the second round. The other teams in the East (besides maybe Brooklyn) don’t pose a threat at all.

So maybe they should make a trade to help them right now? Sounds good but then they run into the problem of who exactly would they trade? Lowry seems like the most likely person to be dealt for something of importance but hes been one of teams best contributors so trading him and trying to make noise in the playoffs wouldn’t make sense. The teams top guys all are in the starting lineup and personally I feel like the bench mob they got from Sacramento is full of scrubs with no value. I feel like if the Raptors made a trade that would help them right now, it would have to be with a dummy franchise.

Then there is the option of trading Kyle Lowry for a piece to build of the future but not contend now. With DeMar Derozen it will probably be a little hard to be bad, so tanking probably won’t work either.

Welp it looks like the Raptors are stuck in no mans land. A trade probably wouldn’t help them either way. The East is too weak for them to tank and they really can’t give up a contributor for a playoff push without maybe giving up a draft pick but that is probably not the best move now. Right now I think the Raptors need to stay put. A trade wouldn’t help them either way.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece!
