Someone’s 0 Has to Go – Mayweather/Alvarez Fight Analysis

Jun 3, 2013

Last week it was announced that Floyd “Money” Mayweather will be taking on the unbeaten and highly regarded prospect Canelo Alvarez on September 14th.  This fight captured the attention of not only boxing fans, but sports fans around the world, as this appears to be a real 50/50 match, with both fighters bringing different strengths to the table. This event is a much needed fight for boxing fans, with the disappointment of not getting to see a Mayweather/Paquiou fight last year, this fight will real make up for all those broken promises and disappointment.

I believe this fight has come at the right time for Mayweather, for several reasons. Firstly, he is coming off from a brilliant display against Robert Gurrero where he looked in fantastic form, with no signs of slowing down with age. This is a big factor as to why I think this fight is at the right time for Mayweather, he is now 36, if he was to wait another year or two to face Canelo, time may of caught up with him, and his lighting fast reflexes might of slowed somewhat, along with this, Canelo would be even more so in his prime, with more experience at world level.

The fight is going to be fought at a catch weight of 152lb, I see this as another advantage for Mayweather. Although Canelo is the naturally bigger man and will most definitely outweigh Mayweather on the night considerably. He already struggle to make the 154lb light middle weight limit, the extra 2lbs that he will have to shed to fight Mayweather could be costly if the young fighter doesn’t do it correctly and drains himself of his strength.

Another factor to be considered should be the strengths that both fighters bring to the ring and how these might play out in the fight. Canelo’s strengths coming into this fight are definitely his power and size advantage, which are both considerable, but now consider Floyds biggest strength, his defense. Floyd Mayweathers defensive skills are second to none in boxing, Robert Gurrero barely landed a clean shot on Mayweather in all twelve rounds of their fight, along with this, Floyd is now back training with his dad Floyd Mayweather senior, a defensive minded coach, who will no doubt make Floyds defense a priority in their game plan to beat Alvarez. If Floyd Mayweather can utilize his incredible defensive skills to neutralize Canelo’s strength and power advantages, I can see Floyd Mayweather sniping Canelo all night whilst staying out of trouble, much like he did against a previous bigger and stronger opponent Diego Corrales.

Overall this is a great fight not just for fight fans, but for sports fans in general, with a win for either fighter being huge. However I believe Floyd “Money” Mayweather will put the stamp of greatness on his legacy on September 14th, whilst improving his bank balance in the process!
