The Atlanta Hawks Off-Season

The Atlanta Hawks Off-Season

Jul 16, 2013

If Danny Ferry set out to change things in Atlanta, he is right on target. In his second year as Basketball Operations/General Manager of the Atlanta Hawks, the team has made significant changes to its coaching staff and roster.

After Larry Drew was fired and replaced with former San Antonio Spurs Assistant Mike Budenholzer, Drew has successfully recruit on of his former players in Zaza Pachulia to his new team, Milwaukee Bucks. Drew was also on the verge of taking Hawks’ guard Jeff Teague before the Hawks matched the four-year, $32M offer by the Bucks.

After missing out on the Dwight Howard Sweepstakes, the Hawks added former Utah Jazz forward Paul Millsap and today signed free-agent center Elton Brand.

After rumors for the past couple of seasons about being traded, Josh Smith is officially out after signing with the Detroit Pistons. The Hawks are now post Joe Johnson-Josh Smith era. The team is looking to establish a new identity.

There are some familiar faces in the Hawks locker room such as Kyle Korver, who just resigned with the Hawks on a four-year, $24M deal. Al Horford is also returning to the Hawks next season.

With Pachulia gone, Elton Brand is needed to back up Horford at center and Millsap at power forward. Elton Brand at 34 years old is still thought to bring a strong presence for the Hawks.

Devin Harris, who last season played for the Hawks, was in the midst of leaving behind the Atlanta nightlife for Dallas before a toe injury and the signing of Monta Ellis by the Mavericks.

So right now the starters for the Hawks are predicted to be: Teague, Korver, Millsap, and Horford. Recent signee, DeMarre Carroll can get the starting nod if the Hawks do not bringing in another veteran guard.

We all know that the Hawks had to do something to get them over the hump after early exits in the playoffs each season, but are they making good moves?
