The Ideal Series: Point Guard

The Ideal Series: Point Guard

Oct 13, 2013

So for the next few days I’m going to do something different here. Everyday I’m going to break down every position in the NBA, then point out the ideal skill sets for that position. Then at the end I will point out the player that best (and worst) fits this description.

So what better position to start with than the point guard.

Top Point Guard Skills Needed:
Equal Scoring & Passing, Elite Handles

Elite Handles:
Lets get this one out the way right now. An ideal point guard has elite ball handling skills. There should be no reason your point guard is getting stripped at half court so they should have handles. Being able to break ankles is a must, it’s a point guards equivalence to dunking on someone. The point guard is going to have the ball in their hands a lot so not getting it taken away from them is essential.

Passing:
The ideal point guard needs to be a great passer. Once he’s finished bringing the ball up the floor he needs to be able to help set up the offense. The ideal point guard will set up his teammates and put them in a position to score. The point guard should look to get the ball to his teammates first and get buckets second. The ideal PG should have a nice enough offensive game that defenders should close in on the fear that he’ll score, so in turn he can dish it off. The ideal point guard should be relied on for about 7 to 10 assist a game.

Scoring:

We all love a player that gets buckets, and the point guard position is no different. The thing with the PG though, is that the ideal point guard isn’t the teams main scorer, he’s more of a complimentary scorer. He knows when he needs to get buckets but at the same time defers to his teammates to score at times. The ideal point guard can use his elite handles to drive the lane for a basket or he can set up and shoot the ball if needed. The ideal point guard should ideally give you whatever is needed on the play, if that’s a bucket or ball movement. The ideal point guard wont be your main scorer but should get you at least 14 to 18 points a night.

I know I didn’t cover defense and that’s because I dont feel as though the point guard has to be an elite defender. As long they can stay in front of their man and stick to the teams defense scheme, they should be fine.

Now that I’ve described the ideal point guard I guess it’s time to pick which player resembles this the most.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece! Second random fact, I got beatz! check me out http://www.reverbnation.com/ielabs
