The Phoenix Suns Eliminated from Playoff Contention

Apr 15, 2014

It would of been pretty cool if the Phoenix Suns made the playoffs in the Western Conference. Before the season began it looked as if the Suns were going to tank the season away and start rebuilding in their second year in the post Steve Nash era. The team had traded away established veteran big men Marcin Gortat and Luis Scola for players that didn’t look to make much of an impact. They traded for Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler but soon moved the veteran Butler for more young players. Then the team took a shot on rookie head coach Jeff Hornacek.

The Suns looked poised to be building on the future.

Instead the Suns came out blazing the competition and for most of the season was a playoff team. The combination of Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic worked wonders. The Morris boys did what they do best and thats get buckets. Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee (who weren’t looked to do much) became big pieces for this Suns team. The fast paced offense worked great for the Suns as the had a pretty successful season and looked to be a playoff team.

Then the Memphis Grizzlies happened. Early in the season the Grizzlies lost Marc Gasol to injury and the team struggled. Gasol came back from injury and the Grizzlies went back to being the dominant playoff team that they’ve been for the last few years. The Grizzlies had dug themselves in a hole early on and had to dig themselves out by taking a playoff spot from someone.

Unfortunately that team was the Suns. Now with one game left of the season the Suns won’t be making the playoffs. The team was expected to start falling early on but just wouldn’t give up. Eventually the lack of talent caught up to them and they lost do or die games to the Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks, which were the two other teams vying for the last spots in the playoffs.

The Suns will have some draft picks and cap space this summer to make some moves. With some more talent there can be a special team down in Phoenix. This year the Suns were fun to watch and surprised a lot of people. Next year they won’t be surprising anybody, these Suns will be back next year and probably way better. It sucks that they didn’t make the playoffs this year because this was definitely one of the better stories of the NBA season.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece! Second random fact, I got beatz! check me out http://www.reverbnation.com/ielabs
