The Toronto Raptors & Sacramento Kings Agree on Rudy Gay Trade

Dec 9, 2013

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to trade forwards Rudy Gay and Quincy Acy and center Aaron Gray to the Sacramento Kings for guard Grevis Vasquez, and forwards John Salmons, Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes.

This trade isn’t the least bit surprising as both teams have had most of their roster available for trade for most of the season. Both the Kings and Raptors have been pretty bad teams the last few years, and now with new management for both teams, the Kings and Raptors are going into two different directions.

The Kings want to be a good team this year. They aren’t tanking, they just aren’t very good but management has been trying to change that. A week ago the King traded for 2012 NBA draft number 2 pick Derrick Williams. Now that they’ve grabbed Rudy Gay, the team looks as though their trying to be respectable in the tough Western Conference. In my opinion I don’t think trading for Rudy Gay (and turning him into a stretch power forward) will make much of a difference for the Kings. The Kings aren’t good and it seems like whoever they draft or trade for just doesn’t make a difference. This is Demarcus Cousins team, and I don’ t think he’ll appreciate Rudy Gay coming in and taking the ball out of his hands.  Gay isn’t a very efficient player and gets a lot of his points by jacking up a lot of shots. Gay pretty much plays like a 6th man but instead has been miscast as a star, and his teams haven’t been very good as a result. The Kings got a player that can score but it’ll take a lot for that ability to pay off. Well at least they got rid of some contracts, but then again they took in Gays massive contract.

The Raptors on the other hand are taking a more modern approach to being a good team. The Raptors are trying to be bad and really took back nothing worth while in the trade. Grevis Vasquez could be considered a big piece in the deal but he’ll join a lot of point guards in Toronto and I doubt he’s taking Kyle Lowry’s starting job. I can see Patrick Patterson making the rotation as well and John Salmons will most likely take Gays spot in the starting lineup. Either way the Raptors did a good thing with this trade. They didn’t want to pay Rudy Gay 17 million to jack up shots and not produce wins. Instead of getting something good back they just took salaries to weigh the trade out. Now the Raptors will have cap space and will be able to tank properly. Moving Rudy Gay will now give them a better chance at tanking and drafting Canada’s own Andrew Wiggins. The Raptors smartened up and realized that Gay isn’t a star, so now their making a move to try and get a star for tomorrow.

I don’t usually like tanking but in the Raptors case, they should totally go for it. Nobody is coming to Toronto straight up and they had to trade for a almost star like Rudy Gay last season. Both teams will probably make another trade this season as well as neither team seems happy with their team yet. Good job Raptors, I guess you guys did alright, Kings.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that.
