UFC 160

May 26, 2013

UFC 160 produced great entertainment for fight fans. Top of the bill was a fight for the UFC heavyweight championship, with champion Cain Velasquez taking on the challenger Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. This was a rematch of their last fight, where Velasquez won via TKO after 3 minutes and 36 seconds of the first round. The second time round the fight unbelievably was over even sooner than the first, with Velasquez winning again via TKO but this time after only 81 seconds! A powerful uppercut floored Silva where the champion Velasquez followed up and hit Silva with a barrage of punches, with no response from Silva, it left referee Mario Yamasaki with no other option than to stop the fight.

Another great heavyweight bout in UFC 160 saw Junior Dos Santos matched up against Mark Hunt. The opening round saw Dos Santos dominate, he dropped Hunt midway through the first round with a hard right hand, Hunt appeared to be in trouble, but Dos Santos did not capitalize on this opportunity and opted to stick to a more cautious approach to the opening round. The second round made apparent Dos Santos speed advantage, where he moved far faster than Hunt who was made to look slightly one-dimensional. Hunt had some success landing with some heavy punches, but the Brazilian took them well and answered back with his own punches and kicks. The third round ended in devastating fashion, with Dos Santos landing a spectacular spinning back kick to the chin of Hunt, which dropped him. Dos Santos followed up with a big punch on Hunt, in which the fight ended with Dos Santos winning via an impressive KO victory. This win puts Santos firmly in contention to be the next man to face the UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Moving on to the lightweight division, TJ Grant faced Gary Maynard. The bout lasted 2 minutes and 7 seconds, with Grant winning via TKO. Maynard started the faster of the two fighters, by starting the bout with a barrage of punches, but he got caught with a heavy straight right hand that dropped him. Grant could sense Maynard was hurt and gave him little space to get his senses back as he followed up with a barrage of punches. Grant then appeared to hurt Maynard with a strong knee to Maynard who was against the cage. Grant then ended the bout with a hard right hand and a barrage of punches. Grant takes his run to 5-0 in the lightweight division, with three of his wins coming via stoppage. Grant will likely be next in line to fight the UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson.
