Wizards & Suns Swap Centers Okafor and Gortat

Oct 27, 2013

Marcin Gortat knew that he was going to get traded. He just didn’t know when it would happen. Now the Phoenix Suns have put him out of his misery and have sent Gortat, Shannon Brown, Kendall Marshall & Malcom Lee to the Washington Wizards for the injured Emeka Okafor and a 2014 draft pick.

I can’t help but laugh at this trade. We all know the Philadephia 76ers are tanking but man the Suns are taking it to a whole new level. The Suns haven’t been shy about getting involved in some trades this off-season, and they really don’t even care what they get back either. The Wizards on the other hand just made a brilliant move and are showing that their ready to try and make a run at the playoffs. Now lets take a look at how this move works for  both teams.

Washington Wizards

The Wizards are trying to be a good team. Now the Wizards will be a good team. The team had made a solid move this off-season by drafting Otto Porter to be their small forward of the future. Also they resigned Martell Webstar who seems to have finally found a home in the NBA. They picked up a veteran stretch power forward in Al Harrington and even got John Wall a good back up point guard in Eric Maynor. They didn’t really overpay any of these players either, which is even a bigger plus. They gave John Wall a contract extension to keep him in Washington so things were already looking up in Washington.

Then starting center Emeka Okafor got hurt. It’s projected that he’ll be out for the rest of the year. For some reason after playing most of his career at the center position, Nene wasn’t considered a good answer at center as the team elected to have him at power forward. Now the team have a two way center who will impact the game on both ends of the floor. Gortat will step right into Okafor spot and probably be a little better at it. To top it off they got a gang of role players that can probably contribute if the team decides to keep them. The Wizards filled their biggest need and are now poised to make a move towards the playoffs, even if it is a first round exit.

Phoenix Suns

The Suns want to be bad, not Michael Jackson bad, but 2011-12 Charlotte Bobcats bad. This team is tanking so hard, and its obvious to everyone. They traded for Eric Bledsoe but he’s still largely unproven. That’s the only decent move they made, I mean besides drafting Alex Len, who I’m not to high on. The Suns probably could of got a decent player or two for Gortat but instead they move him for Okafor’s expiring contract and a 2014 draft pick. Now if the Wizards don’t do to well the Suns got a steal and if they do well, the Suns will still get a good draft pick. Especially added on to the top 3 pick they’ll have next year, this team is definitely moving into a new era. The Suns just moved 4 players and got no players back, these boys are taking tanking to a whole new level.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece! Second random fact, I got beatz! check me out http://www.reverbnation.com/ielabs
