The Cleveland Cavaliers front office apparently isn’t happy with how the teams season went this past season. The last year the team made countless moves to try to move into playoff contention but ultimately ended up heading home early as a lottery team. The Cavs made a few good moves and a lot of bad moves. Okay I take that back, every move the Cavs made was pretty bad or didn’t work in the long run. Now with the season over the Cavs have to decided to right one of their wrong moves by firing head coach Mike Brown.
I really never understood why the Cavs rehired Mike Brown in the first place. He previously coached the Cavs during the good ole LeBron days but was fired when the team was ousted in the second round back in 2010. After a stint in Los Angeles as the Lakers coach he was fired again after the team realized he had no business coaching the team. Then this summer the Cavs decided he would be a good fit in Cleveland and took him back. This year the Cavs posted a 33-49 record, the first losing record Brown has had as a head coach and now hes good as gone. The Cavs also named interim general manager David Griffin as the full time general manager as well.
For Cleveland this was an excellent move. Brown clearly wasn’t the leader that the Cavs needed this time around. Back when the team had LeBron James and played a heavy defensive style of ball, Brown worked but he still wasn’t the leader they needed in the playoffs. This time he couldn’t even get Kyrie and the boys to the playoffs. The roster as well as the coaching all had to be a part in Cleveland firing Brown as they had just brought him back last year.
When I look at the Cavs main guys I don’t see defensive stoppers, I see a lot of guys who can score. This team needs a more well rounded, old school coach that will keep these players in check. Brown simply wasn’t that as the team had multiple problems with their players that he failed to fix. The team will have a first round pick this year to hopefully get an impact player this time around because last year they didn’t. They’ll have some cap room as well because I see no reason why Luol Deng or Spencer Hawes would resign here. Also the Cavs probably will need to figure out what they’re going to do about the Kyrie Irving/DionWaiters tandem.
Getting rid of Brown should be the first step for the Cavs to do something good and make it back to the playoffs. As for Brown he would probably make a good assistant coach somewhere.
