The other day I ran across an article on a college football player posting a picture on his Instagram. The picture featured him and his friends posing with big stacks of cash. The first thing I thought was “good for him”. Then I noticed that their there was a lot of controversy behind the picture and a lot of people questioning where he got the money from. To me I think this all could be avoided.
I think they should start paying college athletes. Just like that, they play for the public’s entertainment; the school makes money off of them, so pay them. It’s not like colleges don’t have money because they do. I’m pretty sure they can give out more than just a scholarship for these athletes’ contributions. They dedicate their time like a professional athlete so why not give them at least a little of the benefits of a professional athlete.
There’s always some kind of controversy over a college athlete (or even high school) getting paid from the school or other sources. They always make a big deal about it but I really don’t see the point of it all. Especially when you already treat these kids like stars but expect them to live like a broke college kid, it’s hard to understand why they prevent them from being paid.
I understand that there are a lot of colleges out there, I mean a lot but I still think something could be worked out. I think maybe the players could get paid by the amount of wins they get in a season, and tournament wins, and awards increase the pay. Everyone on the team would get the same amount regardless of playing time. As for the losing schools, their players still get paid as well but just not as much, they would receive the normal flat fee but could receive more by gaining wins. I definitely couldn’t put a price tag on it but I think this should happen.
I think it’s time for the NCAA to stop treating these athletes like normal students when in reality they’re not. Pay them, your making money off of them anyway, let them get some of the cut.
