Over the weekend the Rice Owls successfully beat down UTEP. The score was 45 to 7 but that’s nothing compared to what Rice pulled in the fourth quarter.
With no way of UTEP coming back, Rice let the 4 foot 9 135 pound running back Jayson Cater take the field. Not only did they let him play but they also ran a play for the little guy. He ran one yard but the fact that he got out there and played was simply amazing. You can watch Carter’s run here:
Carter standing only at 4 feet 9 inches is a walk on player for Rice. After spending three years on the scout team, Coach David Bailiff decided to let Carter take the field to the applause of the crowd.
“I’m thrilled we got Jayson into a Division I football game.” said Coach Bailiff. (per ESPN)
Carter suffers from a genetic disorder that stunted his growth. That has never stopped Jayson Carter because of his talent. He has to be pretty good in order to walk on a Division I football team. Then we have to take into account his beast high school numbers. Cater ran about 18 touchdowns throughout high school and even played defense, recording 92 solo tackles. Carter took the run as nothing since this is simply what he does.
“When you practice every day, it’s like clockwork, I wasn’t really thinking about it. It’s just one carry.” said Carter (per ESPN)
Realistically this will probably be the last we see of Carter on the field, but I hope not. This a feel good story that I hope pops up again. Maybe next time he can get a little bit more run, so we can see him action again.
