Usually when a NBA trade goes down, I scrunch my face up and say something like “that’s all they got” or “what are they gonna do with that scrub” (ex: Clippers/Suns/Bucks trade), but this one seriously surprised me. This is one trade that I feel like everyone walks away a winner.
Sacramento Kings get: guard Greivis Vasquez & two 2nd round draft picks
New Orleans Pelicans get: guard Tyreke Evans & center Jeff Withey
Portland Trailblazers get: center Robin Lopez & guard Terrel Harris
For the Kings they finally have chosen between Evans and Demarcus Cousins, and now they can finally build around Cousins. Evans had a great rookie season. I take that back he had a historic rookie season but ever since Cousins came to town he’s been on the decline pretty much every season.
The Kings needed a facilitator and now have one with Vasquez. They couldn’t just let Evans walk away without a replacement so they drafted guard Ben McLemore which is a pretty big deal. Cousins and Evans didn’t work and now they’re going in a new direction.
The Pelicans just traded for all-star point guard Jrue Holiday so there wasn’t a big need for Vasquez anymore.
Eric Gordon acts like he doesn’t want to be there anyway, so getting Evans who wants to be there and is even willing to play from a 6th man role, is huge. Evans can play either guard (P/G, S/G) spot and overall needed to get out of Sacramento anyway. Picking up Jeth Withey was a low key big move as he’s a great rim protector and that’s exactly what they gave up in Robin Lopez.
The Trailblazers got a steal also as they got rid of an unproven draft to get a proven player in Robin Lopez. In my honest opinion, I really don’t think Lopez is that good but it’s better that they got a true center that can step in and start.
The Blazers were starting JJ Hickson at center last year and we all know that man is a power forward. He did well in that role though and they probably would not have been able to pay him so getting his replacement is good. Harris was pretty much just a throw in but his defense should get him some sort of role within the team.
In my opinion this is one of the rare times where everyone gets ideal pieces. I have to give props to the Kings because this was very unexpected from them.
