It only took Serena Williams one hour and eighteen minutes to retain her #1 ranking and earn her 50th career title Sunday at the Madrid Open. Williams did not have an extraordinary tournament up to the finals, but she mustered her way through to reach the final round Sunday against Maria Sharapova. Heading into Sunday’s match against Sharapova, one she was very familiar with, Williams was 12-2 against the #2 ranked Sharapova. Those two losses occurring in 2004. Williams had a determined look on her face and she handled herself quite well.
Williams won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. This is Williams’ second straight Madrid Open title, 50th career title, and continued feat of ruling the Tennis world at #1.
Willliams states that the red clay that Sunday’s match was played, was great in preparing her for the French Open later this month.
Serena Williams continues her dominance.
