There’s a new 7-foot all-star center in LA. Well I take that back, he isn’t an all-star now, he was a few years ago and hasn’t played like one since, but that’s beside the point. Chris Kaman is coming back to the city that his career began in, just on a different team. That’s right the Lakers have signed Chris Kaman to a one year deal.
You know this is kind of a nice pick up. The Lakers needed a center for next year and they went out and found one. They somehow missed out on the Dwight Howard sweepstakes and have taken Kaman as a constellation prize. Not bad, not bad at all.
The Lakers could have tried to get a big name but knowing how their cap situation is, they picked up a decent player on a great contract. The best part is that they are only getting him for just one year. So if he underperforms (like in Dallas) then they won’t have to deal with him for another year (like Dallas). Come to think of it, none of these one year contract players really worked out for the Mavs.
Anyways, I think this is cool, I like Kaman as a player, he’s big and he plays both sides of the floor. The only problem is the Lakers system. I really have no clue why they hired Mike D’Antoni as coach last season because his 7 seconds or less offense doesn’t work with the group of old geezers he has (except Kobe he’s forever young).
D’Antoni would have rather had Earl Clark playing alongside Dwight Howard in the post than Paul Gasol, and I don’t know if Kaman really fits the mold of either of them. I really thought the Lakers were going to move Gasol to the center spot but I have no clue what’s happening now.
If I’m thinking correctly, signing Kaman takes up the last of the Lakers salary cap so I really wonder what they’re going to do to fill out the rest of the roster. Also I wonder how D’Antoni is going to work with two 7-footers who play close to basket again. And please don’t try and turn poor ole Pau into a stretch power forward again, that guy doesn’t deserve it.
