When the University of Missouri defensive end Michael Sam came out as gay there was question if he would be drafted to any team at all. He was previously a high regarded player who was seen as maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick. Sam was SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year so in other words this guy knows what he’s doing on the football field. Once he came out the closet his draft stock immediately fell. People can try and act like it was because of game but we all know it was simply because Sam came out.
Like predicted, Sam fell very far in the draft but finally he was picked by the St. Louis Rams with the 249 pick overall in the 7th round. This is different from when Jason Collins came out as he was already an established player in the NBA. Sam on the other hand is being drafted while the team and the rest of the NFL know that he is gay. This shows us where sports and society are going as we progress as a more open minded society.
A lot of people were taken back when Michael Sam embraced his boyfriend with a kiss after he was drafted. I’ll admit that it is something that wasn’t expected but it was something that was needed to be shown for society to progress. Sam is gay so he has the right to share his achievement with his significant other. Once he gets on the field and makes some plays then the story can die down because we will be seeing Sam as the football player and not just the gay guy in the NFL.
Hopefully Sam does make the Rams roster so we can see that being gay doesn’t change that fact that your talented. Things in sports are changing and this is just another step that’s needed to be taken in order for society to progress and accept this.
