After having a breakout season at NC State, ACC Player of the Year TJ Warren will reportedly declare for the NBA Draft in a few days. Warren spent the past season showing off his scoring and leadership skills as he averaged 24.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Now Warren will likely be apart one of the best drafts in the last few years, as these prospects this year are the real deal.
Admittedly I hadn’t seen much of Warren until the ACC Tournament. As I sat there and looked through all the team profiles I saw Warrens shocking numbers. From the minute NC States first game of the tournament started I knew this guy was nice.
Warren is the type of smooth scorer that doesn’t need to dominate the ball for most of the shot clock, when Warren gets the ball and its time to score, he quickly finds his way to the basket. This guy drove the lane oh so smoothly and made his way to the foul line at a prolific level. When it comes to scoring Warren was damn near top of the nation, a skill that he can likely translate to the NBA because of his size and athleticism. I didn’t see Warren take many jump shots but my gut tells me his jumper isn’t broke. I do have to mention though that those missed free throws from the NCAA Tournament will definitely be something he has to work on (he shot 69 percent from the line).
Warren is projected to a mid first round pick and that might be good for him. I felt when I watched him at NC State he didn’t have a strong enough supporting cast around him for his team to truly make noises. If he is picked later in the first round he should go to a good team with other scorers, which would be great for both parties. Overall Warren should be a pretty good pick for whoever gets him, as he will add on to what should likely be a very deep draft class.
