This morning it was announced that the Detroit Pistons had fired head coach Mo Cheeks. The move was not very surprising as the Pistons sit at a 21-29 in a weak Eastern Conference currently out of the playoff race. The Pistons made two big moves to get Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith so there were some expectations for the team to at least be a playoff team.
The fans were hoping for assistant coach Rasheed Wallace to step in as interim coach but the guys up top decided to make John Loyer interim coach for the rest of the season. While the Pistons were a disappointment this season, they definitely have not been the biggest disappointment of the season. While teams like the Nets are looking like a new team as of late, the Pistons have been pretty inconsistent the whole year, losing bad games and winning ones that they have no business in.
I do not think that the Pistons record is the real reason why he was fired. I think it was because Cheeks could not get along with any of his players. He benched Josh Smith a few times and even though he probably deserved it, its not a good message to the team when the most established player and the coach are not on the same page. Then there were reports of Cheeks and back up point guard Will Bynum getting into it. I didn’t get the vibe that he was a bad coach but I could see some of the players were having problems with him.
Its still odd that it took all way up until February for a head coach to get fired. As bad as the East has been its a little weird that nobody else has taken the fall. Now we’re left to wonder what the next move for the Pistons will be? Will they trade Greg Monroe? Whats Joe Dumars future with the team?
The next week in the NBA should be pretty interesting as the trade deadline is fastly approaching. Will the Pistons be one of those teams to make a move?
