If I learned anything about basketball during the last four years, I learned that the Memphis Grizzlies are a pretty good basketball team. The first time I realized these guys were good it was during my freshmen year, I remember watching them take on the Spurs in the first round and pull out the victory. They didn’t have Rudy Gay at the time because he was injured but they still rallied around Zach Randolph and beat the Spurs. Then they moved to the next round and took the Thunder to seven games before falling out.
The next year the Grizz made it back to the playoffs again but lost in the first round to the Los Angeles Clippers in a very exciting series. The next year they fired back in the playoffs defeating both the Clippers and the Thunder before ultimately being defeated by the Spurs.
Fast forward to this year and here the Grizzlies were again, in position to take out a title contender early in the playoffs. They took the Thunder to seven games again before collapsing in the second half of the contest. Now if Zach Randolph wouldn’t of punched Thunder rookie Steven Adams in game 6 and gotten himself suspended for game 7 we might of had a different contest. Now the Grizzlies will be heading home early.
To me teams like Grizzlies are the reason why the Western Conference is so tough. It doesn’t matter what seed they are or who they face in the playoffs, they always have an equal chance at winning the series. They have the low post offense of Randolph and Marc Gasol and the leagues most underrated point guard (that the media tell us about all the time) in Mike Conley. If this team could bring in a wing scorer this summer then they’ll be an even tougher match up.
The Grizzlies season is over right now but unless they make a crazy trade that ruins chemistry, this team should be right there in the thick of things yet again.
