We all know it can be very boring during the offseason of our favorite sport. Even as bad as it is for us as fans, it’s even worse for the players of the game. They all pretty much get an entire summer off before hitting the Courts again. That has to be tough for these guys because this is what they do for a living.
A lot of players spend their summer playing in Pro Am leagues, which is ok. The most notable one that I see a lot of players go to is the Drew League. According to Roy Hibbert though, this is not ok. Hibbert states that you can’t get better by playing against scrubs. That’s very true because even NBA role players get off in these leagues (see Spencer Hawes, 58 points).
Hibbert does have room to talk as he spends his summers how a lot of players should. Hibbert spends his summers training with Tim Duncan . I really don’t even have to say how great of an idea that is. Duncan is a hall of famer and he hasn’t even retired yet. He has 4 rings, and was a Ray Allen miss away from a 5th. If more players took this approach image how scary good the league could be.
Imagine if Kevin Garnett decided to take Anthony Davis under his wing? What if Steve Nash trained with a few up and coming point guards (ex. Kyrie Irving, Jrue Holiday)? What if Shaq decided to stop making fun of Dwight Howard and showed him how to bang in the paint? Man what if Kobe Bryant took James Harden under his wing for a summer?
Tim Duncan is usually always under the radar and that seems to never change. I wonder how Hibbert will look next year after another season of training under the best? I wonder how all those players playing against scrubs in Pro-Am leagues will improve?
