Well this is nothing new. Another year, another Pau Gasol trade rumor. Its seems like once the Lakers stopped winning championships it was Gasol on the hot seat and been a prime candidate to trade. The Lakers did it once but it got vetoed by the now former commissioner David Stern. Now in his last year in his contract Gasol finds himself in trade rumors again.
The Phoenix Suns are interested in trading for Gasol and they should be. Right now (despite a 16-31 team record) hes averaging 17 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. On a good team like the Suns are right now Gasol could push them to be even better. The only problem is that I really don’t see where Pau would fit in with that Suns team. Most of their guys are young and athletic, which he isn’t. Plus their big men are all playing very well so it would probably mess up chemistry and their rhythm.
The problem I have with this trade rumor is not on the affect Gasol would have for the Suns but the way it would affect the Lakers. I think it is about time for the Lakers to stop putting this guy on the trade block. His contract is almost up, he has never been a problem for him and he produces. Its sad how this guy is always rumored to be traded. Its not like the Lakers will get someone very useful for him, hes 34 years old. Teams are valuing draft picks and young players more than ever now and that is exactly what they would want for Gasol. Teams trading for him would probably only want his expiring contract and honestly why would the the Lakers try and trade him for another contract, they can have cap space this summer by keeping him now.
I really think they should keep him as a sign of loyalty. Teams these days are more concerned about trading you instead of letting you leave when your contract is up. Its not like the Lakers are doing anything this season anyway. I think for once they should utilize the draft and pick a building block for the future. If Pau Gasol wants to leave at the end of the season that should be his choice. I think they owe him this, he has been nothing but loyal to them.
