We all know the story of Jonathan Martin. The offensive tackle who was bullied and harassed by his teammates to the point where he walked out on the team. Martin left the Dolphins in late October because of the treatment from his teammates. It took a long time for everything to come out but we eventually learned that Martin was indeed telling the truth.
With the way things went down in Miami it was pretty much a no brainier that Martin wouldn’t be returning to that team. Lucky for Martin he now will get a new chance with a title contending team in the San Francisco 49ers. Yesterday on the first day of free agency the Miami Dolphins traded Martin to the 49ers for a conditional 7th round pick.
This should be great for Martin as he can get away from the situation in Miami and now he’ll be reunited with his college coach Jim Harbaugh. Also the 49ers have guys ahead of him on the depth chart with Joe Staley and Anthony Davis at tackles so Martin won’t be expected to come in and start, he could be used as extra depth, if he makes the 53 man roster.
For the 49ers this move will be low risk as if he doesn’t work out or causes problems he can just be cut before the season begins. Being under his old coach and not being in a toxic locker room should be very helpful for Martin after what he went threw in his first two seasons in the NFL. The Dolphins did what they had to do in this situation, now the only question is what will they do with Richie Incognito.
