Ever since the Oklahoma City Thunder traded away James Harden things have been different. They went from a team with endless potential and multiple options on offense to a team sort of at a stand still with few scorers. This summer after Kevin Martin left the only thing that was left from the Harden trade was the unproven Jeremy Lamb and the recently drafted Steven Adams. The role of 6th man was not designated to anyone, instead Reggie Jackson and Jeremy Lamb were supposed to take it on together. Its worked pretty well since the team has the top spot in the West right now but I’ve always thought they should make a move.
Now the Thunder have finally made a move for another scorer by picked up the recently buyout victim Caron Butler. Butler spent the first half of the season on the Milwaukee Bucks who have been the worse team in the league by a long shot. Butler was a veteran on a team that was going nowhere, averaging 11 points and 4 rebounds. Although Butler is not the scorer that he once was (averaged 20 points per game from 2007-09), he will still play a big role for this Thunder team. He won’t be a starter but will play big minutes off the bench. He can be a decent scoring option off the bench with his long range shooting. Playing with Durant and Westbrook should give him a lot of open shots.
Now Butler won’t bring the same amount of production as James Harden did or Kevin Martin off the OKC bench, that would be ridiculous to expect. Butler should simply be another guy who can put the ball in the hoop off of the bench. Combined with Jackson and Lamb, this should be a pretty good second unit. Its been a while since this team made a big move, and it came right at the right time. The best part is they didn’t even have to trade anyone. The Thunder should be an interesting team to watch come playoff time.
