Former University of North Carolina guard Rashad McCants recently came out and claimed that he didn’t do much school work during his time in college. In fact McCants said that he was taking fake classes in order to be eligible and rarely went to class. This is a player who won a national championship and also was on the Dean’s list. UNC has already been in the eyes of the media because of academic fraud and now this just pushes the situation to new heights.
As a recent college graduate this story rubs me the wrong way. This guy got a free pass on his school work because he plays a sport but the rest of us students had to work hard for our grades. Here is a a guy who admitted to not doing his own work or going to class and he made the Dean’s list during his time as a student. There is always an emphasis on the student part when referring to student athletes but in situations like this I guess its not true. UNC probably won’t get that much of a penalty for this and probably make it as if McCants is lying which is usually how these things work.
I am usually an advocate for students athletes (I’m a firm believer that they should be paid for their services) but I can’t sit here and say that this situation is right. I don’t want the NCAA to sweep this under the rug either, I want this story to continue to develop. I know there has to be more players who probably had the same privileges at other colleges as well.
I feel like when it comes to college athletics that the schools care more about their players as athletes than students. Guys like McCants get free rides to play the sport they love but the ride needs to be about both school and the sport. College athletics just seems more and more corrupt and shady as the years go by.
