Way back last summer the Charlotte Bobcats were coming off a 21-61 record. They had no big man presence at all but had a decent back court of Kemba Walker, Gerald Henderson and Ramon Sessions. The Bobcats came into that off season looking for front court help. They took a reach in the 2013 NBA Draft by taking drafting Cody Zeller out of Indiana with the 4th overall pick, trying to address their front court. Then the Cats made what was their biggest move since picking up Gerald Wallace many years ago.
The Bobcats signed veteran big man Al Jefferson to a multi year deal. When the Cats signed Jefferson they told the fan base that they don’t want to be losers anymore. Even with the promising 2014 NBA draft coming up, the Bobcats told the world that they weren’t going to tank. There was some criticism of the Jefferson signing at first, people believed he was being overpaid and wouldn’t make a big enough impact for the Cats. Now with the NBA season coming to a close and the Charlotte Bobcats having clinched a playoff birth for only the 2nd time in franchise history, the Al Jefferson signing could be almost seen as a steal.
When it comes to the Bobcats offense, its pretty much all on Jeffersons shoulders. The Cats can simply dump it in to Jefferson and go back on defense with 2 points scored. Jefferson makes it look easy in the paint as he scores with ease. Also Kemba Walker has improved as a scorer as well which helps Jefferson and the Cats on offense. Head coach Steve Clifford has brought his defensive schemes to Charlotte and turned this team to a defensive team as well. Jefferson was never known for his defense but once he came to Charlotte and bought into Clifford’s schemes, he has been a pretty good defensive player as well. If the playoffs started today the Bobcats would be the 7th seed and face the Indiana Pacers. With their playoff ticket already punched, now we can sit back and watch how the playoffs finish the season off. As the last season of Bobcat Nation, the Cats will end their run on a positive note, going to the playoffs. Regardless of how they do in the playoffs the Hornets will have something good going for them next year.
The younger players will continue to develop and they’ll still have Al Jefferson.
