As I sit here and watch the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs play, I started to realize something. As the top two teams in the Western Conference go back and forth and momentum continuously changes, I’m realizing that this game is anybody’s to win. This contest, like the rest of the Western Conference is really anybody’s to win.
Of the 9 teams (10 if you want to count the T-Wolves) that are vying for the 8 playoff spots, I can see a good amount of those teams moving on to the second round and beyond. Now when I look at the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns I see teams that could easily be knocked out in the first round but the rest of those teams? There might be some upsets going down.
Right now the Spurs, Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets hold the top four spots. All of those teams are elite and will most likely have home court advantage in the playoffs. Then on the other side of the playoffs you have the Portland Trailblazers, Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies. Now that’s when things start to get interesting. None of the 5-7 seeds look like they’ll easily be beaten, and realistically have a 50-50 chance of beating one of the 1-4 seeds. That’s scary.
Over in the East we can most likely pencil in whoever wins in the first round but out in the West we might really have a battle. There are so many good teams out there that teams with above 500 records won’t even make the playoffs, which is crazy.
When it comes to the NBA playoffs, this year out West should be interesting, anything can happen.
