After missing the playoffs this season with a 8-8 record, there was a little question of what the Chicago Bears would do with starting quarterback Jay Cutler. He was a free agent and missed a good chunk of the season with injuries. Well the Bears didn’t make us wait very long for their decision on Cutler.
Today the Bears announced that they’ve resigned Jay Cutler to a 7 year deal worth 126 million with 54 million guaranteed. In other words, Cutler just got paid.
The question is was this a good deal?
Since Cutler was traded from the Broncos back in 2009, things have been pretty up and down for the Bears. Besides making it to the Conference Championship in 2010, the Bears haven’t accomplished much with Cutler. Their success came back in 2010 and its 2014 now (finally got to say it), so it could be a questionable deal.
The lack of overall success could be a red flag but realistically who would they have gotten to replace him? In the NFL everything starts with your quarterback and Cutler has been that guy for the Bears for the last few years. He’s not the greatest quarterback but he is a pro bowl talent. The team wasn’t bad enough to get a top pick this year and really only missed out on the playoffs because they lost the last game. You have to pay your quarterback and that’s what the Bears are doing, even if they are making him a little overpaid.
He has chemistry with his offense and the support of the coaching staff with this deal so I think the Bears did just fine. Maybe they overpaid him but that’ll be determined during these next 7 years. The Bears, not in the playoffs, have a lot of time to make moves so this shouldn’t be the last we hear of them this off season.
