Trades are very common when it’s comes to the NBA and MLB, but when it comes to the NFL that’s the complete opposite. The NFL trade deadline came and went with only one trade going, yeah that’s not a typo, only one trade. It was nothing spectacular you know your standard player x for draft pick type trade.
It’s so annoying to hear all the big name players in the trade rumors only to watch the deadline come and go because nobody wants to make a move. Why does the NFL even have a trade deadline? It’s one of the most anti climatic days of the NFL season.
The reason that teams don’t make mid-season trades is obviously because of chemistry and strategy issues. In the NFL you have to adjust to the team’s strategy, the team doesn’t adjust the strategy because of you. You can’t get out there without knowing the plays because you will screw something up. The rest of these players have learned these plays since training camp so throwing someone in the middle of the season isn’t ideal. Look how off Josh Freeman was in his first game as Viking as a perfect example.
I can understand why elite/decent teams don’t make these types of moves but what about you scrub teams? Chemistry means nothing if you’re losing a lot, why not bust a move and try something new? Odds are you’re probably out of playoff contention by the deadline away.
Another difference I’ve noticed with the NFL and NBA is how they deal with expiring contracts. The NBA will use a expiring contract as a trade chip so get a piece to the roster, in the NFL they will just let a player’s contract run out and let them walk if they want to. If players don’t fit the culture they’ll get cut as simple as that.
The way that teams are built in the NFL seems to be the reason why blockbuster trades don’t really go down. It seems like teams build through the draft, which is cool. I just wish I would have saw a big trade at the deadline.
