Could Michael Jordan Play in the NBA Today?

Oct 4, 2013

So yesterday Jalen Rose caused a good little conversation in the sports world. On Bill and Jalen’s NBA Preview on Grantland.com columnist, Bill Simmons and former NBA player Jalen Rose have been ranking each NBA team and posting a video of the two breaking down how the teams will do this season. When it came to the Charlotte Bobcats, Jalen Rose made the bold prediction that Michael Jordan will play one game for Bobcats this season.

Now we all know that this couldn’t really go down because Michael Jordan is a team owner and team owners cant play. Now if this rule wasn’t in place I could definitely see a Mark Cuban-Dirk Nowitkzi pick and roll happening in Dallas. This isn’t the point though, as we’re going to act like the rules down apply here, because well rules suck. If that’s not good enough for you then let’s say commissioner David Stern comes up with a rule where former players can come back and play even after owning a team, it would be the Michael Jordan rule.

Ok now that the Michael Jordan rule is in affect, how would this work?

Well for one, the Bobcats could definitely use Jordan as he pretty much beats all their players in one on one games. He can still dunk, and I’m pretty sure he’s still in shape. The team would sign him to a ten day contract and then he brings out the legendary number 23. Of course Jordan starts at shooting guard over Gerald Henderson because I mean really what the hell could Henderson say anyway. So let’s think about this though, Jordan’s 50 years old so he’s without a doubt injury prone. SO that means we only run him for about 25 minutes, and give him the less talented defensive match up so he cant reserve his energy for offense. We would only expect about 15 points out of him but nobody would complain if he dropped 20.

Now that its settled, it would have to be a big game for MJ to play in. With Jordan recently saying that he could take LeBron James in his prime, its only right that Jordan plays that one game against the Miami Heat. Now that would be a game to remember, 50 year old Michael Jordan coming out once to show LBJ who the real king is.

We can only hope though. Michael Jordan was the best player the game has seen so I think he could definitely come back at 50 years old and still ball. Realistically he could start for the Bobcats but if he was greedy he could realistically come back and run 6th man for a title contender like the Oklahoma City Thunder or his old team the Chicago Bulls. There is no reason to bet against MJ, he’s a legend and I’m sure if he really wanted to come back he would do it somehow. Even at age 50 we still want Mike, it just shows that his legacy will live forever. No other retired star would get this type of attention on a comeback but MJ.

Even though its wouldn’t happen, its still fun to wonder how MJ would do in the NBA today. Knowing him though, if he lost that one comeback game, he would probably suit up for the rest of the season because he wants to win that bad.

Was good though, it's me Everick Davis Jr. Born and raised in Portsmouth Virginia, I'm currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. I watch every sport (not so much golf) but I am huge on the NBA. My favorite players right now are J.R. Smith, Russell Westbrook & Nick Young. Drinking beer and watching sports is my favorite past time and I do it year round! I used to play basketball on the regular until everyone else kept growing and I still stood at 5'6. So that's when I channeled my efforts into becoming the next Stephen A Smith or anything close to that. I currently write for "The Carolinian" newspaper in Greensboro, NC and intern for http://theurbantwist.com/ Random Fact about me, I love anime, my favorite one is One Piece! Second random fact, I got beatz! check me out http://www.reverbnation.com/ielabs
