Draft Profile: Kony Ealy

Draft Profile: Kony Ealy

Defensive End

University of Missouri

Strengths

Listed at 6’5 275, Kony Ealy has an excellent frame to play Defensive End in the NFL. Should be able to add weight and become stronger without losing any athleticism. He has incredible straight line speed for his size and can get to the quarterback in a hurry.

Weaknesses

Too often neutralized at the point of attack. Takes poor angles to the ball carrier. Lacks lateral agility. Has a mean streak, but it does not materialize until after the play. Does not hold the edge and too often runs himself out of the play. Late to the action and his motor does not always run hot.

Conclusion

Missouri has been producing talented defensive linemen like Justin Smith and Aldon Smith (no relation) of the San Francisco 49ers, and that list will soon include Kony Ealy. He has the tools to make an impact rushing the passer at the next level, but has to become stronger at the point of attack. Ealy must also harness his anger and use it during the play, that alone will make him more productive. Has a pass rusher’s mentality, which not all teams will see as a positive. Will have to work hard and become a student of the game to reach his immense potential. Boom or bust qualities.
