Going into the new WNBA season, the Phoenix Mercury was the favorite to win big because of their draft position and the result of getting the #1 pick in Brittney Griner. Many thought the duo of Griner and Diana Taurasi was pure gold but thus far the Mercury find themselves off to a rough start. Currently the Mercury are 0-2, with loses coming from Chicago and the Seattle Storm.
There has been much to say about Griner to start the season both on and off the court but nothing sticks out more than her inability to stay out or foul trouble to start her rookie season. On the offensive end, Griner continues to prove that she can be a crowd pleaser with three dunks altogether in the first two games. She now has to find a way to get things done on the defensive end of the court. Despite posting a double double in each of the two games to start the season, Griner has also committed quick fouls in the first half of play that causes her to have to spend a lot of time on the sidelines.
The season has just kicked off but adjustments must be made now. In order for the Mercury to win a championship trophy this season, Griner must find a way to become a better defender so that her, Taurasi, and eventually Penny Taylor can lead the team to the promise land.
