Why J.R. Smith Was Named 6th Man of the Year

Apr 22, 2013

J.R. Smith is known for his athleticism and willingness to put others before him to win, with those couple traits mixed with his aggressive game, he outlasted the likes of Jarrett Jack, Jamal Crawford, and Kevin Martin. JR Smith unlike most of the other candidates has that explosive personality and playing style, highlighting dunks that seem abnormal but give the crowd tons of energy to electrify his teammates.

Yes, Jamal is the king of crossovers but he doesn’t consistently come out with the intense vibes that course through JR Smith’s body. Jarrett Jack has had some stellar games but he too isn’t consistent either. JR has an overall game as well, most people know him for his dunks and highlights with that, but he also has a pretty good jumper and can hit the long ball when needed. He’s not super clutch but if he has the opportunity to shoot in a tense situation he can come through for the Knicks. I’m not saying other players couldn’t but if you could choose between Jamal, JR, Jarrett and Ryan Anderson to hit the last second shot, who would you choose?

I’d believe you would choose Smith or maybe Crawford but still, he’s a better overall player than Crawford and his dunks do change the atmosphere of crowds and courts, which is a big boost for any team. I think the NBA made the right choice to give it to JR Smith and he’s going to run with this through the playoffs, as you saw in Game One vs. Boston, stealing, dunking and doing everything he could to seal the win. All off the bench, that’s your six man, all tatted up with immense athleticism and an overall born for basketball frame.
